Here we are – same place as December 9, 2010, right after the concrete steps were set in place that we featured in our post, This Winter Let Design Build Team Heat Your Path. Dave, Maggie, Garret and Merejo in front of radiant heated steps and sidewalk.
Wow! There’s no snow on the heated side! However, without the ground underneath the steps Dave had to go back and put additional insulation underneath and behind each step to help hold the heat in better. The steps were built from galvanized metal pan poured in place with concrete over electric heating mats. They are switched together along with the sidewalk.

Green home building and renovation is catching on more and more. Some homeowners are choosing to have their entire home built green, while others are selecting to make green upgrades as needed. Some people are still on the fence, mainly because they are not sure if a green home will pay off. They want to know is it really worth it to pay more for a home in the beginning in exchange for lower energy bills and environmental friendliness in the long run? We think so. The advantages of green homes include, but are not limited to:
- You save energy, which in turn saves money. Traditional building practices allow energy loss from heating and air ducts, which aren’t found in green homes due to products providing thermal resistance.
- Healthier living. Since indoor air can be polluted twice the amount as outdoor air many green homes feature low VOC paint, natural stains, formaldehyde-free glue and mechanical ventilation systems.
- Less environmental harm. Green built homes leave a smaller footprint because of adequate planning to prevent wasted building materials, low water consumption and etc.
