Two Story Home Spaces out in 2012?

Posted on February 28th, 2012 by

Recently Design Build Team came across an article on titled “Kiss These 10 Once-Popular Home Features Goodbye” . Two of the features in the article had one thing in common, they both were two story home spaces. The features were the two-story family room and the two story foyer.

Even though these features create beautiful grand spaces in the home, the blame for the decrease in the trend is increased utility bills. Today’s home buyer is more conscious than ever of the importance of an energy efficient home. The article states that, “Home buyers are more focused on energy-saving windows and appliances than on soaring spaces in 2012.”

What are you focusing on for your Kansas City area home improvement? Is it energy efficiency, or is it the luxury upgrades that you’ve always wanted?

Creating Wide Open Spaces

Posted on February 24th, 2012 by

Have you ever felt like the walls of your home were closing in on you? It might not have seemed that way 25 years ago, but now, all the rooms are feeling tighter and tighter as the days go by. At this point, a home renovation is inevitable and a great option for your new home is an open floor plan. Those restricting walls have had you and your family feeling closed in, but with an open floor plan, you can finally spread out and have wide open spaces that let everything from the design to the natural light flow.

Don’t worry, if you are still a fan of your intimate spaces, you can certainly still have that with an open floor plan. Intimate spaces can be designed in your new home with creative features like the addition of columns, glass sliding doors, room partitions and etc. that will divide the space but still provide an open feel that comes natural in the space.

Renovate your Non-living Spaces

Design Build Team does understand that building a brand new home addition is not always in the current budget. However, in the mean time, there is nothing wrong with renovating those existing spaces in your home that are not being used as a livable space.

Let’s take the basement for example. If your basement is a dark place that just houses the washer and dryer, why not create an efficient laundry room worth enjoying?

Or perhaps a play room if you have small children. Think of hobbies or activities you and the family like to do together and construct an entertainment room based off of that.

Another non-living space that you can transform is the attic. Depending on how your home is designed, you may need to add a staircase and extend your HVAC systems and plumbing, but there still won’t be a need for foundation work or a new roof, which will cause the costs to jump.
