The Skylight: Bringing in more Natural Light and Natural Beauty

Posted on March 28th, 2012 by

A wonderful way to open up your dark kitchen or bathroom plus make the beauty of the open sky part of your home’s design plan, have a skylight installed. Not only is it a great way to bring the beauty of outdoors in, is also introduces more natural light into the room. Sometimes there is no exterior wall available to insert a window, so the alternative is to create a window in the ceiling.

A great practical use from a skylight is for extra ventilation during the summer months.  But the most important aspect to adding a skylight is the planning process. “You really need to be aware of what the outcome will be and not just cross your fingers and knock a hole in the ceiling,” advises Arrol Gellner, an Emeryville, Calif.-based architect and author of newspaper column “Architext.” -hgtv.com

One thing you need to remember is that the sun is not one giant light bulb, it does move. If your skylight is installed at the wrong angle or in the wrong location, possible outcomes are overheated rooms and sun-damaged cabinetry.

Are you considering a skylight for your Kansas City area home?

Integrating Kitchen Appliances

Posted on March 23rd, 2012 by

Many homeowners want their kitchens to be a true extension of their homes. And even though our appliances are very necessary, we must admit, sometimes they can cause a disturbance in the flow of aesthetics in the room. A great alternative in the kitchen that will create the look of home is integrated kitchen appliances.

Take a look at this past Design Build Team kitchen remodel project. The only appliance seen is the range oven that adds a nice pop of color with the red knobs and the microwave. However, the refrigerator is concealed with cabinet doors that allow it to blend in with the rest of the kitchen.

Your small appliances can make your kitchen counters look cluttered. A great way to hide them, is with custom cabinetry that will hold all items. For added efficiency, have electric outlets installed so you won’t have to worry about moving appliances to use them.

What are some things you want to hide in your kitchen?

Now that spring is at our door step, many people will be out and about trying to get those perfect summer bodies. But wouldn’t it be so nice and convenient if you did not have to hassle with those annoying gym contracts? What’s the solution? A home gym.  Working out outdoors is great too, but you can’t always depend on Mother Nature to cooperate with your exercise routine.

Having your very own home gym means taking a leap forward in moving toward a healthier lifestyle. We know it’s not easy finding time to carve out of your day to dedicate to going to the gym. There’s so much you have to do in a day’s time: take the kids to school, work, after school activities, help with homework, grocery shopping, cleaning, running errands and the list goes on. If you have a home gym, you can dedicated10 minutes of workout time  here and there to keep you moving and get in that much needed exercise without sacrificing time.
