When you first start decorating a room, it is important to find its focal point.  Every room should have one.  A focal point is an element in the room, either there architecturally or created by you, that will take center stage.  A fireplace or a piece of art can serve as a focal point.  Once you establish your focal point you can arrange your furniture around it.
