There are six basic design rules you should adhere to before you take on a project. They are proportion and scale, balance, contrast, colors and textures, rhythm, and harmony.
The first golden rule has to do with proportion and scale. You always want to be conscious of the size of the room you are designing. Make sure you buy furniture and accessories that are proportional to the room.
Rule number two for creating the ultimate space is finding balance. Â Â Whether you are creating a symmetrical, asymmetrical or radial balance it is important to create a visually pleasing display.
Creating contrast is rule number three. This rule sometimes gets overlooked by individuals who are so concerned about having everything in the room match.
Design rule number four is rhythm. Although a room needs contrasting features to keep it interesting, it is important to also establish a basic rhythm. This can be accomplished by repeating a color throughout the entire room.
Which brings us to rule number five- colors and textures. This is a very personal choice, one that should be discussed and agreed to by the homeowners.
Last, but not least is harmony. This can only occur when all the above rules are followed.
This space we created above the kitchen sink is an example of balance. Notice the two light fixtures, the three windows, the five potted plants and the double sink.
